Most interior design and architecture firms in Malaysia model in SketchUp and then render with one of three tools. Here is how they differ.

SketchUp – where to start

SketchUp is the fastest way to model spaces, furniture and buildings in 3D. Every rendering tool below works with it, so learn SketchUp first. SketchUp 3D Fundamentals is a 1-day course for complete beginners.

Then pick a renderer

Tool Best for Learning curve
Enscape Fast, real-time renders and walkthroughs straight inside SketchUp or Revit – great for client meetings Easiest
Lumion Beautiful exterior scenes, landscapes, animations and video Easy to moderate
V-Ray Photorealistic, high-control interior and product renders Steeper, highest quality

Quick rule: if you need good images fast, learn Enscape. If you present exteriors and videos, learn Lumion. If you want the most realistic interiors and have time to fine-tune, learn V-Ray.

Where AI fits in

AI rendering tools such as Coohom now turn layouts into rendered design options in minutes – useful for early concepts and quick client approvals. Our AI Rendering with Coohom course covers this.

Finish with a presentation

Many designers add Photoshop to polish renders into presentation boards.

Frequently asked questions

Should I learn V-Ray or Enscape first?

Learn Enscape first if you want quick, good-looking renders and walkthroughs with little setup. Learn V-Ray if you need the most photorealistic interiors and are willing to spend more time on lighting and materials.

Do I need SketchUp before learning a renderer?

Yes – Enscape, V-Ray and Lumion all render a 3D model, and most designers build that model in SketchUp. Start with SketchUp 3D Fundamentals.
