Both are Autodesk products and both are used every day in Malaysian design offices – but they do different jobs.
The difference in one sentence
AutoCAD is a drafting tool: you draw lines, arcs and text to make 2D drawings (and some 3D). Revit is a BIM tool: you build a 3D model of the building from walls, floors and doors, and the plans, sections and schedules are generated from that model.
Learn AutoCAD first if…
- your job is mainly 2D drafting – shop drawings, layouts, interior or M&E drawings, details
- you work with consultants or clients who send and expect DWG files
- you are new to technical drawing and want to learn drawing conventions
Learn Revit first if…
- you want to work on BIM projects – government projects worth RM10 million and above now require BIM in Malaysia
- you are an architect, architectural technician or engineer working on full buildings
- you want to produce drawings, 3D views and quantities from one model
The common path
Many people learn AutoCAD Essential (2 days) to get comfortable with CAD, then move to Revit Architecture Essential (3 days) for BIM. If you already draft in AutoCAD every day, you can go straight to Revit.
Both courses come with a certificate, and you can sit the official Autodesk Certified User exam for AutoCAD or Revit at our Certiport testing centre in Petaling Jaya.
