Building Information Modelling (BIM) is the way buildings are now designed, built and managed: one shared, data-rich 3D model instead of separate drawings from each consultant.
What changed in Malaysia
From 1 July 2025, the Ministry of Finance's Treasury circular PK 1.15 requires BIM for government development projects valued at RM10 million and above. Private projects are strongly encouraged to follow. That means consultants and contractors who bid for public work need people who can model, coordinate and manage BIM.
BIM roles you can grow into
- BIM Modeller – builds the Revit models for architecture, structure or MEP
- BIM Coordinator – combines models, runs clash detection and resolves issues
- BIM Manager – sets up the BIM Execution Plan, standards and the Common Data Environment
- BIM Estimator – takes quantities (5D) straight from the model
Three ways to get BIM-ready
- Short courses (3 days each) – start with Revit for your discipline, then move to the BIM Coordinator course. Good if you are already working and need a specific skill.
- Professional Certificate in BIM (about 3 months) – Revit Architecture, Structure and MEP, Navisworks coordination, 4D/5D, BIM process and an Autodesk Certified User exam. Good for fresh graduates and career switchers.
- Advanced Diploma in Digital Construction Technology – the full-time route for school leavers.
AI is the next step
BIM teams are now using AI to speed up modelling, documentation and coordination. MTTC's Smart BIM Design with AI and Smart BIM Management with AI courses show how.
