PUTRAJAYA: This country’s Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) products or products need to be given recognition commensurate with other academic qualifications.
Bermaz Auto Bhd Group Operations Chairman, Datuk Shamsuddin Amran, who is also Chairman of the 2024 Bumiputera Economic Congress (KEB) Main Career Choice (KEB) Education and Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) Cluster, said TVET should not only be seen as a 3D (dirty, dangerous and difficult) sector. ) solely.
“The perception of TVET as a ‘second grade’ job or a 3D sector (dirty, dangerous and difficult) needs to be changed, in fact we forget that there is another ‘D’, namely money. TVET should be seen equally with other academic qualifications.
“In industry and the job market, they always measure academic levels (in recruiting workers). However, if you look at Japan and South Korea, skills are considered to be very important,” he said at a plenary session in conjunction with KEB 2024 here, today.
For this reason, he said, a special ministry needs to be created to harmonize, monitor and set a more effective direction for the TVET sector.
“The establishment of the TVET ministry has its own act and basis. Because now, if we look at there are 12 ministries that carry this TVET. So in the management involvement session that we held before this, we formulated that this TVET needs to be controlled by a ministry.
“Apart from that, there is a need to create a special salary certificate for TVET that is based on performance. Currently, he said, there is no single harmonized salary system or scheme and we want this (TVET salaries) to need to be notarized,” he said.
The Main Career Choice TVET Cluster, which previously carried out three engagement sessions with industry between last January and February to collect various recommendations to be submitted to KEB 2024, succeeded in formulating eight strategies and 80 actions in its efforts to improve the quality of the country’s TVET sector.
The eight strategies are proposed to fulfill four main focuses, namely increasing the professional and competent Bumiputera workforce based on TVET and planning the development of Bumiputera techno-entrepreneurs.
Two other focuses are increasing the involvement of Bumiputera in skilled and high-income careers and increasing the income of the skilled huffaz group.
